When the Wine Spills

When the Wine Spills

Loudoun County Wine

As residents of Loudoun County are well aware of the growth of vineyard attraction.  In this post, we are going to discuss the impact of gravity on a wine glass, and the resulting mark of impact on your carpet.  So, let’s start with When the wine spills – keep in mind, these are tips for fast action…these tips do not replace the quality of a deep cleaning from companies like Carpet Keepers.
Wine stains on a light-colored clothing or carpet are the nightmare of any homeowner who serves wine in their home. Fortunately, there are ways to diminish and even remove the deep red stains that wine spills can leave behind when the party is over.

White Over Red

To help neutralize the staining effects of red wine on the carpet, pour white wine over it. White wine neutralizes the red wine, making it easier to clean off the rug or carpet. You could also try water or club soda if you wish. Blot up the excess liquid very carefully and pour a layer of salt over the spill. Don’t be stingy with the salt; if it starts to appear slushy or wet, add some more. Let it dry overnight or until it is dry. Remove large pieces by hand and vacuum the rest.

Carpet Shampoo and Stain Remover

Once you have most of the liquid blotted up, you can try using carpet shampoo or clothing stain remover to handle it. Follow the directions to treat the stain like any other dirt or food stain on carpet or clothing.

Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda

Always blot up as much of the wine as possible before applying any stain remover. For the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda solution, spray peroxide directly onto the stain. Coat it liberally with baking soda and allow to sit as long as possible. Be sure that the baking soda and the peroxide cover the stained area completely and allow it to sit for two to three minutes. Rinse with water and wash.

Vinegar and Soap/Washing Soda

Vinegar performs admirably as an all-natural neutralizer for purple stains and can be combined with soap or washing soda for a superior stain remover. Drench the affected area in vinegar and apply soap or washing soda directly on top of it. Let it soak in for a few minutes before rinsing and washing.

Wine Away

Wine Away is a world-class wine stain remover than no wine lover should be found without. It even comes in travel sizes for convenience. As with any stain remover, Wine Away is most effective when applied as soon as possible after the spill occurs. If you wait too long, you may be faced with a stubborn mark on your light-colored clothing or upholstery after all your best efforts. You can even use this product on other types of stains including pet urine, blood, and brightly-colored sports drinks.

Stains aren’t the end of the world. They can and do happen. It’s okay. Taking the steps listed above to combat these stains can help preserve the color of your carpets, upholstery, and clothes in spite of Murphy’s Law.
