Carpet Cleaning: When and Why
How Often should I Clean my Carpets? That is one of the common questions we receive from new customers, so we thought you would benefit from a shared response.
Dirt is your carpet’s biggest enemy. When grime, dust and grease from everyday living get into your carpet, they make the fibers tear, mat and split. That’s why your carpet starts to feel rough and look flat. And that’s why the best way to keep your carpets looking their best is to have a regular cleaning routine.
There are four levels of carpet cleaning:
Vacuuming: Do this at least once a week.
Spot cleaning: As soon as the stain happens.
Interim cleaning: Occasionally using spray or foam rug cleaner can help freshen your carpets.
Deep cleaning, also known as restorative cleaning: This is cleaning done by professional carpet cleaners. The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends using a hot water extraction (steam) method to clean your carpets at least once a year.
When Do I Do These?
How often you use all these methods will depend on several questions.
How many people are in your home? If it’s just you, or you and another adult, you can get by with a weekly vacuum, regular spot cleaning, and deep cleaning once a year.
If you have children, double that; you’ll need to vacuum at last twice a week and get your carpets professionally cleaned every six months.
Do you have pets? If so, you probably already know that means more frequent vacuuming. You should also deep-clean every six months to be sure you’re getting out allergy-causing pet dander, stains and pet odors.
If you have a large family or a lot of pets, you might need to deep-clean every two to three months if you want your carpets to stay fresh-smelling and healthy.
Can’t I Just Rent a Machine?
A rented cleaning machine is fine for interim cleaning, but it can’t take the place of an expert, professional cleaning. That’s why a professional cleaning is called a “restorative” clean. It restores your carpets to their former beauty and makes them look and feel like new. This requires tools, products and techniques that only trained professionals will have.
If you have a warranty on your carpet, it probably states how often you’re expected to deep-clean your carpets, usually every 12 to 18 months. And a rental machine doesn’t count.
Dirt makes your carpet look old and worn before its time. That’s why these carpet companies are strict about demanding regular treatment by professional carpet cleaners. They know that no carpet will perform as it should if it’s being destroyed by grit, soil and grease.
