23 May How to Remove Water Stains from Carpet
Cleaning Water Stains From Your Carpet
You work hard to keep your carpets clean, but despite your best efforts, spills can happen. Water might seem harmless enough, but water stains often turn an ugly brown color. That’s caused by dirt in the carpet fibers coming to the surface in the water.
You might be shocked by the amount of dirt that’s trapped in your carpets. If you want your carpets to look fresh and bright, your best bet is to have them professionally cleaned.
In the meantime, here are some steps you can take to get rid of those water stains.
Vinegar Solution
This method uses common items that you probably already have in the house. It is safe for polyester carpets but not wool. You will need:
- Regular-strength household white vinegar.
- Soft white rag or towel.
- Bucket or bowl.
To use this solution, simply mix equal parts of white vinegar and warm water. Dip the rag into the mixture and use it to clean the stains. Focus on the tips of the fabric. Be careful not to soak the carpet.
You don’t need to rinse the vinegar out. The smell will dissipate as the solution dries.
Soap and Water
Use this method right after a spill happens. This will work on any type of carpet fiber. For this method, you’ll need:
- Any liquid soap that doesn’t contain bleach.
- Warm water.
- Soft towels or rags.
If you’ve just spilled the water, first blot up the water with a clean towel. Press it deep into the carpet to pick up as much water as possible.
Water causes dirt and grease to embed themselves into the fibers. That’s why you’ll need to use soap and water to clean the grime before it leaves a permanent stain.
Use a mixture of mild soap and warm water. Dab it gently with the cloth. Rubbing too hard can damage the fibers.
Mold and Mildew
If your carpet’s stains are caused by a leak or dampness in your house, you could have mold or mildew on your carpets. You’ll have to have them professionally cleaned once you determine what’s causing the leak.
If you don’t catch mildew problems in time, you could end up having to replace your carpeting. Avoid that problem by getting a professional to assess the damage.
